Competency Area 7: Non-point source pollution AEM

Summary

  • Pollution is classified by its source, either point (originating from a discrete entity, such as a farm or barn) or non-point (originating from a broad area, such as a large land area or the air) Pollutants include common soil nutrients, as well as synthetic compounds like pesticides, other chemicals and toxins, sediment, and wastewater. Water quality is measured through physical (color, turbidity) and chemical (contaminant concentration) means.
  • Best Management Practices are encouraged to reduce pollution, and are often required by federal, state, or local regulations.
